Mt. Zion AME Church, Clay County Historical Society map historic walking tour

GREEN COVE SPRINGS – As Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church readies for its 150th birthday, the Clay County Historical Society will join with the Mt. Zion Community Development Corporation for a heritage walking tour of the city.

The walk will include stops at the original site of Mt. Zion AME Church at 549 N. Palmetto Ave. where four Black and six white men started the church in 1873, as well as Augusta Savage Park, the site of the former Muldrow Hotel and Dunbar High and along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The walk will be from 10 a.m. to noon on March 25, starting at the Mt. Zion old parsonage building.

The walk is free to the public, but residents are encouraged to register at mtziondcdgcs@gmail.com.

The walking tour will also include stops at the Historic Triangle, the original site of Clay High, Ma and Pa Gustafson home, the historic business district, Spring Park, the former site of the Clarendon Hotel, Village Improvement Association and the First African Missionary Baptist Church.
