JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Jaguars punched up to a 14-0 quick lead behind a muffed punt that got a seven yard scoring pass and a 22 yard strike to D.J.Chark to put the Jaguars up midway through the first quarter in their Thursday night game against the Tennessee Titans in TIAA Field.
The installation of rookie Gardner Minshew II as Jacksonville's quarterback after Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles broke his collarbone after 10 plays against Kansas City, has reinvigorated the seemingly boring Jaguars offense to a level of unexpected attack with the Washington State slinger whipping five scores in his 11 quarters played since Foles went down.
Statistically, Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota had better yardage; 304 to 204, but with no scores while Minshew had two touchdown passes.
On the pass catch spread, Leonard Fournette had six passes, Dede Westbrook had five and D.J. Chark had four passes with one score as Minshew threw to six pass catchers for the night with tight end James O'Shaughnessy getting two his way with a seven yard score.
From there, the Jaguars defense, with All Pro defensive end Calais Campbell dominating from numerous sets on the defensive line, got nine sacks for the night to keep Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota on his heels for most of the night. Campbell and friends also limited Titan running back Derrick Henry, a Yulee High grad, to just 44 yards.
In 2018, Henry set an NFL record with a 99 yard scoring run as part of 238 yards rushing and fourth touchdowns against the Jaguars.
Both teams are now 1-2.
In the third period, kicker Josh Lambo nailed a 40 yard field then made a tackle on the ensuing kickoff. Lambo also nailed a fourth quarter 48 yarder.
The Jaguars will travel to Mile High Stadium in Denver to take on the Denver Broncos on Sun., Sept. 29.
