OCALA - Experience counted for Middleburg High golfer Chase Carroll who got to regions despite a sub-par district tournament, but then calmly locked into his game at the region 1-2A championship tournament with a fourth place finish to earn a return ticket to the Class 2A championship tournament in Howey-in-the-Hills next week.

Carroll had just five bogies on the Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club course with 13 pars and just one birdie to score back-to-back 38 rounds on nine to stay within earshot of the leaders.

With Mosley High taking top team honors (324) over Fernandina Beach and Gulf Breeze, the top three teams were locked into the state match with Carroll, Bishop Kenny’s Cody Tucker, the individual champion (72), and Bentley Van Pelt of West Florida (75) earning the top three individual spots around Tanner Millar of Fernandina Beach in a reversal of normal finishes.

Spots five and six were individuals not on the top three teams; Stanton and Bay high golfers, with Mosley’s top finisher at sixth and Gulf Breeze’s top finisher at 12th.

Middleburg, with a strong second (85) from Lucas Wahlstrom, edged Clay, led by Robert Young (87), with a 361 finish to the Blue Devils’ 366.

Orange Park’s Brock Buhnerkember finished 37th with a 91 with Ridgeview’s Javier Cruz 52nd at 96.
