ORANGE PARK – One of the 95 license plate readers installed by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office around the county got a hit on a plate listed as stolen on May 20, and that led to the arrest of a couple from Jacksonville.
According to the arrest report, deputies were alerted to an area near Blanding Boulevard and Edson Drive of a car taken from a Texas Roadhouse in Jacksonville a day earlier. He spotted the vehicle at a gas station and saw Derrick Leonard Simmons, 20, standing next to the car and Savanna Wonya Williams, 23, in the passenger seat.
Both claimed they got the car from a man named “Leo” for $50 earlier in the day.
They both were charged with grand theft auto. Simmons’ bond was set at $10,003, while Williams’ bond is $5,003.
