MIDDLEBURG - Middleburg High flag football has been racking points to the tune of 55, 33 and 19 in their first three games behind quarterback Brooke Swenson and speedster tailback Meghan Bonsor.
The fleet-footed flaggers, coached by Zsolt Takacs and former Clay High flag coach John Stilianou, who handled a few deep playoff runs for the Blue Devils, have speed on both sides of the field with Sam Harbison a major target for quarterback Brooke Swenson. Swenson battered Wolfson in game one; a 55-6 win, with five touchdown tosses plus a rush score on 350 yards passing. Defender Cheyenne Jenkins picked off three Wolfson passes.
Hardison has been glue-fingered on both sides of the ball with scores in Broncos’ 33-0 win over Ridgeview plus three interceptions in 19-6 win over Oakleaf. Swenson had three passing scores against Oakleaf.
Clay, Fleming Island and Keystone Heights are still undefeated as well. Some soon-to-be exciting matchups will be the Clay and Middleburg clash on April 6. Clay, with coach Jared Moses without Stilianou’s defensive acumen on the sideline, has been putting up his big numbers with the Blue Devils scoring 112 points in three games with no scores against them. Quarterback Dakota Stills has taken over from departed Ciara Zino and has quickly assimilated the Blue Devil offensive scheme with wideouts Izzy Shadegg and ballcarrier Annalee Harbison chunking down big gains on the ground and through the air. Rusher Johanna Hunter is quick off the snap and creates confusion and hurried passes. Whether Moses can outwit Stilianou will be an interesting puzzle.
Fleming Island, with coach Clinton Lyons back with papa Lyons on his side, has put up two shutouts in two games with 58 points. Lyons has breakaway speed in quarterback Mykayla Maddox and tailback Allesandra Martin who both had nifty 40-plus runs against Robert E. Lee. The Golden Eagles big matchup will be Keystone Heights on April 6 with the Lady Indians unbeaten in two games, but with more defensive work than offense.
Ridgeview, unfortunately, played both Clay and Middleburg in their first two games, but coach Trentin Davis is stock full of athletes with Khamil James an outside threat and Alexis Haile the inside power runner. Nia Blocton, a multi-position athlete, can create plays from both sides of the ball.
Against Ridgeview for Middleburg, Bonsor was offensive powerhouse as coach John Stilianou employed more run game attacks.
