BARTRAM TRAIL - On the first play of their passing scrimmage with Bartram Trail High School, the one-two passing duo of Fleming Island High seniors Dean Hyams and Broden Domenico threw the gauntlet and started the exercise with a 40 yard scoring play that put the Bears on notice that Fleming Island football will be fast attacking.
Domenico, who displayed some of his breakaway prowess in last year's then-district showdown with the Bears in a key district 3-7A matchup with a 90 yard kickoff return touchdown, continued as the primary target of coach Ryan Wolfe's fast-paced offense attack with two more scores; one a post pattern in front of two Bartram Trail defenders, the other a fake and go sideline pattern that Hyams sold with a quick shoulder roll before launching to Domenico downfield.
Hyams also punched in with scores to Will Stephens on an inside crossing post pattern, to newcomer Isiah Blair, from Orange Park High, who snagged an end zone corner fade pass for a score, and lithe newcomer Darius Domenick, a 6'-4" speedster, who found a slice of grass behind the Bears secondary. Blair made four acrobatic catches on the offensive side of the ball for Fleming Island.
Hyams misfired occasionally with passes at receivers shoelaces and missed 6'-3" tight end Nate Chance twice on over patterns in front of the Bears safety. Garon Blake caught some Hyams passes to keep drives moving including a 40 yard pass play on the second series for Fleming Island.
On defense, another Orange Park High newcomer, Shaq Magwood, showed some uncanny read and react capability with four interceptions on cutback routes by Bartram Trail. On one pick, Magwood grabbed a deflection off linebacker Zack Payne that, in a game situation, could have been a quick pick six.
On the whole, Fleming Island's secondary, with Darius Harris on one edge, Blair on the opposite edge and Magwood roaming multiple positions, did achieve a handful of potential secondary sacks as the Bears' quarterback did execute throws after a five second count.
Bartram Trail did get behind the secondary twice for scores; one the corner and one over the middle.
Fleming Island will travel to a Valdosta High pads camp in early July with defending 9A champion Mandarin coming to Fleming Island for a 7v7 event on July 15.
