Hogg, Linge get Dairy Farmer Player of Year nods

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS - With a school record 47 goals on the season, Keystone Heights High junior forward Dean Hogg will be attacking next season to bolster the career record for the Indians as Hogg finished his playoff season with a Florida Dairy Farmers Class 3A Player of Year nomination.
Note: Hogg finished third in Class 3A in the player of year voting; Joel Castellanos of NSU University School was first in 3A with 52 votes; Delwin Flores of American Heritage was second with 45 and Hogg was third with 42 votes.
For St. Johns Country Day School senior John Linge, the nomination in Class 2A comes after a second deep region playoff run for the Spartans under coaches Brad Schmidt and Jimmy Merritt.
Hogg, with 47 goals and 17 assists for coach Trevor Waters, led the Indians into the region playoffs with a 16-8-3 final season record and a region fifth seed that would up a 3-3 overtime penalty kicks loss to Florida State University High School. FSU High eventually loss to Bolles in the region semifinal. Bolles lost in the Final Four to Tampa Catholic, 4-0, with Tampa losing in the 3A championship to unbeaten University High (Ft. Lauderdale) School.
Hogg’s new record of 47 surpassed Cory Hedding’s 42 goals. Hedding, from 2012-2015, had goal totals of 25, 31, 33, and 42.
Keystone Heights opened with four wins and a tie before a loss to Palatka, 1-0.
Hogg had a game-high of five goals in an 8-0 win over Fort White in game two with another five-game performance against St. Francis Catholic. Hogg scored four against Middleburg.
Keystone Heights beat P.K. Yonge, 2-0, in their district semifinal before losing a 6-1 district final to Crescent City.
Hogg’s improvement in goal production increased from four as a freshman, 23 as a sophomore and 47 as a junior.
While Hogg was top goal scorer, senior Colby Townsend added 31 goals for Waters.
“Once Colby started scoring goals, he was pushing to pass him in the goal scoring,” said Waters. “It made for a good front attack as both were going after it.”
Linge, with 25 goals and nine assists put the Spartans back into district title land and region playoffs with the front-loading attacking program at St. Johns.
Schmidt also was nominated as a Class 2A coach of year honoree for his 17-2 season finish.
Other area nominees included Adel Iriskie, a senior midfielder at Mandarin (7A); Jason Cooley, coach at Mandarin (7A); Nick Ramsden, a senior forward at Leon (6A); Brian Schaefer, a senior at Fletcher (6A); Cameron Crandall, coach at Creeksie (6A); Steve Stone, coach at Stanton Prep (5A); Basil Benjamin, coach at Gainesville (5A); Alex McAninley, senior at Bishop Kenny (4A), C.J. Joyner, soph at Suwannee (4A); Zach Auger, senior at Baker County (4A); Matt Case, coach at Bishop Kenny (4A); Chris Joyner, coach at Suwannee (4A); Alonzo Munoz, senior at Bolles (3A) and Jim Lieb, coach at Bolles (3A).
Senior forward Leonardo Perez from Cape Coral Mariner High School has been selected the 2020 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Soccer following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school boys’ soccer coaches and media representatives.
Perez scored 69 goals and added 31 assists in leading his squad to a 24-3-2 record and a Class 4A state runnerup finish. He finished his high school career with 148 goals and 68 assists and will continue his soccer career at the United States Naval Academy.
Perez, who was the state’s Class 3A Player-of-the-Year in 2019, and was earlier named this year’s Class 4A Player-of-the-Year, tallied 91 points in winning this year’s award. Class 7A POY Joao Negrao of Boca Raton was the runnerup with 77 points, followed in order by Class 5A POY Carson Bien of Tampa Jesuit (69), Class 3A POY Joel Castellanos of NSU University School (47), Class 6A POY Brian Schaefer of Fletcher (44) and Class 2A POY Patrick Horan of Canterbury (42).
Marcelo Castillo won the Coach-of-the-Year award after leading Boca Raton to the Class 7A state title, finishing with a perfect 28-0 record to become only the fifth team in Florida prep soccer history to finish a season unbeaten and untied.
