GCS council decides against honoring Pride Month

Posted

In what was supposed to be an easy, sweeping yes-or-no vote, the Green Cove Springs City Council decided against a proclamation to honor June as Pride Month during Tuesday night’s meeting.

As part of the Consent Agenda, it was one of seven items considered for enactment by a single motion. Discussion on a single issue wasn't allowed unless it was pulled from the agenda, so the proclamation was removed.

At issue was a guideline that prohibits the city from endorsing or opposing any political or social issues. The vote to remove it from the agenda was 4-1, with Vice Mayor Ed Gaw dissenting.

In other business:

    • The council approved payments of $148,675 and $54,150 to Sawcross for the construction of the Harbor Road Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility, as part of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's State Revolving Fund, specifically for the Harbor Road Water Reclamation Facility Expansion, Phase 2 Plan.
    • Approved spending $49,020 at Southern States for reclosers used in the electrical system.
    • Approved the funding of $31,200 to Wesco for 25kV Splice purchase, $53,672 to Wesco for Brenau and Sweetbriar Wire Purchase, $112,032.50 to Irby for Okon 25kV Wire purchase and $162,696 to Gresco for Switchgear purchase to be used in the Rookery project.
    • Approved the mayor or city manager to execute an agreement between the City and Lexon Insurance Company for $300,000 to settle the Liquidated Damages and existing latent defects associated with the Williams bankruptcy, with the completion of the construction of the Harbor Road Wastewater Treatment Facility.

The city council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The next meeting will be held on June 17, when the first reading of a proposed increase in the city’s electrical rates will be presented.
