GREEN COVE SPRINGS – The Magnolia Point Women’s Club recently awarded scholarships totaling $14,000 to four young Clay High graduates.
Scholarship Chair Joanne LaBeouf introduced the recipients at its June meeting, including: Samantha Migliore, who plans to attend the University of Central Florida to pursue a career in Health Sciences; Sara Giraldo-Castillo, who will be attending the University of North Florida to pursue an academic career in Behavioral Neuroscience; Simone Johnson, who will attend Florida A&M University and study Criminal Justice; and, Kaylee Stacy, who will attend Union College in Kentucky and major in Biology.
MPWC’s Gisela Ferrell Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 to commemorate Gisela Ferrell and her advocacy of education for girls graduating from Clay High. MPWC funds the scholarships through their December sale of luminaries to the residents of Magnolia Point, which is also complemented with net proceeds from the sale of directory ads, representing a community effort.
The scholarship awards are based on financial need, grades, school and community activities and a written essay. MPWC has awarded $124,000 in scholarships since the program’s inception in 2003.
The committee’s early beginnings were led by Susan Mitchell, the first chair who worked to get the message out about the value of the club’s work.
She has maintained contact with a few of the girls who have kept her apprised of their personal college success stories. Their stories speak to the value of the scholarship fund on the recipients. Chairs of the scholarship committee, past and present, include Susan Mitchell, Elaine Axelrod, Sharon Sprott, Dorothy Wood, Thresa Oliverio, Nancy Mills and LaBeouf.
