ATLANTIC BEACH - Fleming Island High freshman golfer Dylan Frein got the top spot for the Golden Eagles who finished third at the Fletcher Invitational held Wed., Sept. 30 at Atlantic Beach Golf Club. Bartram Trail won the event with Bolles second, 295-296, with Fleming Island third at 297 in the closely competed event.
Adam Vermut, a senior at Wolfson that finished 17th in Class 1A last year, won with a 65 (6-Under par 71) score off six birdie holes to hold off Andrew McLauchlan of Providence (18th in 1A last year) at 68 and Camden Goldknopf of Episcopal (second in Class 1A last year) and Rohan Singh of Ponte Vedra who both finished at 69. McLauchlan closed fast with two birdies on the final two holes, but Vermut had already built a four stroke lead. Wolfson finished second in Class 1A last year behind Lake Mary Prep.
Frein with a 1-over 73 led the Eagles with four birdies in the front nine of the course, but fell with three bogies off the back nine holes. Frein did double bogie on the sixth hole.
Also for Fleming Island, Michael Amendola was 13th with a 74, Jaylen Abbas and Colton Swartz were both 18th at 75, and Andrew Davis was 36th at 79. Amendola hit two birdies; four and nine, but struggled with three bogies to slip off the lead. Abbas stayed on par through the first six holes before double bogies on 7, 8, 9 pushed him down the leaderboard. Abbas would rally with birdies at 10, 14 and 18. Swartz opened with a 40 for the back nine after a par score on the first nine including a birdie on seven. Four bogies on the final nine dropped Swartz. Davis, Fleming Island’s top finisher at last year’s fifth place Class 3A championship tournament at 11th, got zapped with a disastrous final five holes; three bogies and two double bogies.
In the team lineup, Fleming Island was second out of Class 3A with Bartram Trail winning and Nease and Ponte Vedra both finishing as third for Class 3A teams. Ponte Vedra is the defending Class 2A champion now in 3A.

Vermut and Wolfson teammate Adam Waller both scorched the course with 33s with Abbas second with a 35.
