Fourth collision course set for Panthers and Broncos

ORANGE PARK - Those pesky Lady Broncos just won’t go away.

“They are on the other side of the region bracket and may get to us in the region final,” said Ridgeview High coach Steven Henry. “We finally lose the Bishop Kenny and Ponte Vedra region playoff game that has kept the program from advancing in the past six years.”

Henry, in his first year at the helm for the Lady Panthers, upped the streak of six district titles to seven this year with a thrilling 3-1 win over Middleburg in the third meeting; all Panther wins, for the year.

“They have to get past the top seed, Mosley High before us,” said Henry, who will face sixth seed Choctawhatchee (21-7) on Wed., Nov. 3 in the region semifinal. “If they get that done and we get ours, then we meet again. That says a lot about volleyball in Clay County.”

Choctawhatchee, led by junior hitter Yonnie Sanford’s amazing 461 kills, lost to Mosley in their district 1-5A final.

Against Panama City Arnold, Ridgeview dominated from the start to a 3-0 win with games of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-12 behind the “net presence” of power hitter Eliana Reynolds (254 Kills) and sophomore blocking machine Haley Robinson.

Ridgeview, 18-10, was led against Arnold with Reynolds knocking down 12 scoring shots with London Francis adding eight kills. Robinson and Teeya Desgoutte had six apiece over the net.

“Elaina is the leader of that net group,” said Henry. “Haley has been phenomenal as a blocker for us and London has become a quiet killer for us; 18 kills against Middleburg. We have a good mix of seniors and underclassmen with a lot of energy.”

One change in lineup has been the installing of new setter Mariah Bostic-Jones in the lineup to set up Henry’s attacks.

“She is super smooth and can get the ball high,” said Henry. “She’s doing a great job keeping the defenses guessing.”

Middleburg, the fifth seed, advanced with a 3-0 win over Stanton, the fourth seed, with games of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-15 with coach Carrie Prewitt getting 16 players with scoring shots over the net led by sophomore Connor Rahn’s seven and Josie Bemis and Tamin Trott’s six shots.

In region 1-2A, St.Johns Country Day School (18-5) beat St. John Paul II in Tallahassee 3-1 in their region opener with games of 25-22, 18-25, 25-18 and 25-16 to advance to a region semifinal against Harvest Community (18-4), the number two seed who beat district top seed Countryside Christian.

Against St. John Paul II, Lauryn Mateo hit for 11 scores with Brynn White and Emma Gonzales adding six each. Kinley Hall had five blocks for the Spartans defense.

On the other side of the bracket, Oak Hall (19-8), the top seed, faces Christ’s Church Academy (14-6), the fifth seed.
