Faith walk: Culture of Joy

Last week the Baylor University Bears won the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship, the crowning achievement of March Madness.

In 2003, Baylor University basketball was in shambles. Junior forward Patrick Dennehy was murdered by teammate Carlton Dotson. Head Coach Dave Bliss was dismissed and presided over a team culture of drug use, improper payments to players and recruiting violations.

Enter Scott Drew, a new coach with a daunting challenge. His friends tried to talk him out of taking the job because of the existing problems. But Coach Drew said “I prayed about it. I felt led to come here.”

Since that time, Coach Drew has rebuilt the Baylor program using what he calls a “CULTURE OF JOY”. JOY = Jesus, Others, Yourself.

When you put things in the right order in your life, you are a winner. Regardless of what others may say, you are a champion. Putting God first is the starting point.

This “Culture of Joy” Coach Drew implemented took a failed program and turned it into a national champion. Jesus in first place led Baylor basketball to first place. basketball to first place.

Jesus made clear that joy will be the byproduct of obedience to His teachings.

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11)

Coach Drew said, "I think the biggest thing is modeling after Jesus. He was a servant leader. And with us, it's serving our players and helping them achieve their goals and dreams, not only on the court but in life and in the classroom.”

Amazing things can happen when we make Jesus the Lord of our life. He has the answers to our struggles and life challenges. All we need to do is put our full faith and trust in Him.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Think about implementing a “Culture of Joy” in your home, your workplace, and your relationships. God is looking for His next Champion!
