I just came home from grocery shopping. It is my choice to do most of the shopping because when I go to the grocery store, I will actually shop for the items we need. My wife “buys;” I “shop.”
When I buy groceries, I want to get the “buy one, get one” deal; I want to get the vegetables that are in season and not pay the higher cost of buying them at the “wrong time;” I am careful to pick and choose based on price first.
This may be a good plan when buying groceries. (I’m sure many will disagree with that statement; I know my wife will.) At the least, it will save you some money.
However, this is not a good plan when you look into God’s Word. There is no allowance for you to “pick and choose” the parts that you want to accept from His words. In fact, the Bible says of itself: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” (2 Timothy 3:16 NLT)
So “all Scripture” is given by God’s inspiration. If any of it is true, all of it is true. No option is given to allow us to choose the parts of His Word that we find acceptable and deny the parts we don’t like.
I cannot take God’s Word the same way I shop the grocery store! If I accept John 3:16, I must also accept Galatians 6:7 (which says, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.”)
We have every right to believe in God’s love. But then we must also accept His judgment. Both of these facts are true of God’s nature.
Recognize that all the Bible is God’s inspired Word and that it is His message to you. It will then become “a lamp for your feet and a light on your path.” (Psalm 119:105)
