Enjoying clean energy with Clay Nutrition Shake Bar

ORANGE PARK  —Just about everyone knows what it means to need an energy boost. Take after your early morning rise or sleepy fatigue during a long day.

Caffeine seems to always be the answer for most. But, did you know that this bitter stimulant may be what's keeping you down.

According to MedAlertHelp, 85% of people in the U.S. consume at least one caffeinated drink daily, with energy drinks, teas and coffees being popular choices.

But, Caffeine Informer noted that a 16 fluid ounce energy drink could contain at least 66 grams of sugar.

What if you could ditch the countless sugary additives and get a pep in your step the right way. The clean way.

At Clay Nutrition Shake Bar, co-owner Kim Sutton said pick-me-up's can be sweet, just as much as they can be healthy.

"A lot of people go to the gas stations and get Monsters or Red Bulls, or the Alanis and they're full of sugar, or they're full of artificial sugar. And the caffeine is not clean caffeine. It's reproduced with all kinds of junk in it, " she said.

Kim, along with her husband Michael, operate the nutrition club on Kingsley Avenue, as well as one in Keystone Heights.

Together the two serve up drinks for the community, loaded with clean drinking alternatives for all.  Whether it's thick shakes or lighter juices and teas, Kim said there is a wide variety of options available for both children and adults.

"They curb your cravings, you're not snacky. You do have energy all day long without having that crazy sugar crash."

All drinks, such as the peach, mango, watermelon and pineapple-flavored Southern Dream,  have less than one gram of sugar, and are keto, diabetic, low carb and low calorie friendly.

While shakes, such as the  chocolate, banana and peanut butter Elvis,  don't have more than nine grams of sugar. Kim said the sole addition of toppings is what appeals to a sweet tooth.

Customers can also turn their beverages into what they call the "kitchen sink", loaded with max caffeine, aloe, biotin, collagen, vitamins and nutrients.

"You get that extra energy boost, and you don't crash after drinking them. Some of the drinks are equivalent to two cups of coffee, caffeine wise. And then some of the other drinks are equivalent to a can of soda."

Additionally, Kim said the club provides caffeine-free meal replacement shakes and pre-packaged concoctions, popular with those on-the-go. She said these are especially popular with those who are diabetic.

"A lot of diabetics can come in here and get the shake and not feel like they're going to make their sugar go through the roof," she said.

Since opening back May, Kim said the business has seen massive appeal within the local community. Just recently, she said Clay Nutrition hosted a tea drop at local schools for teachers.

"We make deliveries to the high school and to the elementary school, to the teachers during the week. And, you know, we sponsor a lot of the, academic teams downs there in Keystone. They all get there hydration drinks before they go on the field. That way they're not drinking a Gatorade that's full of sugar."

A family-oriented, comfortable, and different outlook on sweet treats. Three things the Suttons said the club embodies. And their excited to further their commitment to building a healthier community.

"We hope to be successful and serve hundreds of people a day. The goal is to get this club up and running," Kim said.
