Clay Today will test your knowledge weekly and provide interesting facts on various topics. This week, college football rivalries. Motorhomes started pulling into RV City for last Saturday’s Florida-Georgia game at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville for the 102nd (if you believe Florida) or the 103rd (if you believe Georgia) time, dating back to 1915. While that’s a storied history, it’s a neophyte matchup compared to other longstanding rivalry games, like the Yale-Princeton game that’s been played since 1873 or Yale-Harvard since 1875. Eighty football rivalries date back to the 1980s, and the most-played rivalry game is Lafayette-Lehigh, which started in 1884. That’s why it’s called “The Rivalry.” Those two teams have played 159 times, with Lafayette holding a 10-win advantage. You’d think two Ivy League schools could come up with a better rivalry nickname than “Rivalry.) But Yale and Princeton have played 145 times, while Yale and Harvard, aptly called “The Game,” have tangled 139 times. However, Florida-Georgia will always have a claim to the best nickname – “World’s Largest Outdoors Cocktail Party.” Go Gators! Dawgs! Sic 'em!
