GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Among many of the events to get canceled this summer are all the 4-H in-person day camps. Fortunately, day camps have moved online so that 4-Hers can keep busy with some fun activities this summer and learn about a variety of topics.

The 4-H Nature Retreat Day Camp is one of those unique opportunities and launched last week; children of ages 5 to 11 who register for this camp will spend each day exploring a new Clay County Park with their families.

The 4-H Nature Retreat Day Camp is a self-paced six-part adventure, so feel free to jump in at any time and complete the course by visiting county parks whenever it’s convenient for you and your family. This camp will teach children about local ecosystems and have them hiking, biking, and fishing their way through six natural parks in the county. Participants will get up close and personal with our very own Black Creek, a calm, slow moving tributary of the St. Johns River; this day camp will showcase the native species that make home on the creek, like the local Black Creek Crayfish, Florida Cooters and many more.

Children will be encouraged to get active and stay healthy as they complete exercise challenges around the county and even pack a healthy family picnic as an activity during one of the days of camp.

Among many unpleasant effects of the global pandemic we continue to face, families and their young children have been stuck inside. While we encourage everyone, including participants, to continue to practice social distancing and other sanitation tactics to combat the spread of illness, the 4-H Nature Retreat Day Camp is a great opportunity to get out of the house and have fun with the family in a safe way. County parks are open for the public to enjoy and park staff are diligently working to increase sanitation and protect visitors.
