ORANGE PARK – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office accused a 69-year-old mother of offering to buy an airline ticket on Dec. 27 for a victim of a domestic abuse attack if she’d drop charges against her son.
Renee Elaine Burkes, of Orange Park, was charged with tampering with a witness after deputies determined she attempted to help her son after the victim’s injuries included broken capillaries in her left eye, which they believed were caused by strangulation during the assault. According to the arrest affidavit, when deputies arrived, Burkes attempted to keep the victim from leaving her house and speaking with deputies.
Burkes was released from the Clay County jail after posting a $10,003 bond.
