Augusta Savage Arts and Community Center celebrates ‘stellar’ year

Hundreds attend joyous Augusta’s Legacy Family Recognition

FLEMING ISLAND — By any measure, Friends of Augusta Savage Arts and Community Center President Henrietta Davis-Francis said the students and staff had a “stellar” year.

She and the other members of the organization were so proud that they easily were supported by their supporters — the City of Green Cove Springs, Village Improvement Association Women’s Club, Hi-Liner Fishing Gear, Pragmatic Works and Magnolia Point Women’s Club — in making sure the children knew how much their efforts were appreciated and received.

Saturday afternoon’s Augusta’s Legacy Family Celebration did precisely that.

There was music, magic, food, play and recognition. It was everything the renowned artist would have appreciated most since it focused on the children who found ways to express their individualistic artistic expressions.

The gathering was at Sullivan Hall on the campus of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. More than 100 attended. Adults were thrilled to see their children have so much fun, while children were mesmerized by a family-orientated Dadician Magic Show by Robert Sands. They laughed and giggled when he continually misdirected red balls, but he had the children screaming when he made two live bunnies “magically” appear.

“We are celebrating outstanding young people who worked so hard and diligently with the volunteers, teachers and parents,” Davis-Francis said. “They are the most precious commodity that we have.”

Other contributing sponsors were Community Sponsors Bob and Karen Rigel and Family sponsors Home Video Studio of Green Cove Springs, Conrad Massa, Fidelity Brokerage Services, Carolyn Hines-Clarkson and Green Cove Springs Mayor Steven Kelley.

The Augusta Savage Arts and Community Center is dedicated to positively impacting the lives of youth and families. Its mission is to promote programs that inspire healthy, productive and creative lives, with a special emphasis on the underserved members of our community.
