GREEN COVE SPRINGS – A steady stream of cars pulled into and away from the Clay County Fairgrounds last Monday, Jan. 18, as part of a day-long vaccination event for COVID-19 provided by Ascension St. Vincent’s. The hospital gave 2,500 inoculations during a nine-hour stretch, and for most, the event had few, if any, glitches. Patients who fit the first level of priority for the Moderna vaccine – people 65 or older or healthcare workers who have direct contact with other patients – signed up online for their free vaccinations in advance. Once they arrived, they were taken into a tent to register and fill out medical forms, then into one of the Exhibition Halls were 30 technicians, doctors and nurses were waiting to give the shot. After that, patients were asked to wait for at least 15 minutes to make sure there were no side effects. All patients also were given an appointment time for their second, and final dose, of the vaccine in a month.
