PALATKA – A Fleming Island physician was among the winners at the 28th annual Wolfson Children’s Bass Tournament.
Robert Tyson, a pediatric emergency medicine physician in the Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center, and a resident of Fleming Island, won first place in the VIP and Friends tournament with his fishing partner Tyson of St. Augustine. The duo had a combined weight of 22.72 pounds. Brandon Williams and Deryl Williams of Lake City came in second with 21.02 pounds, and Dennis Redd and Robby Ratliff of Lake City was third with 20.37 combined pounds.
More than 1,200 fishermen in 630 boats competed for cash prizes in the tournament held May 180-20 at Palatka City Docks.
First place honors went to Adam Newburn of San Mateo, Florida, and John Mobley of St. Johns, Florida. They posted a five-fish aggregate weight of 25.33 pounds for the top cash prize of $10,000. The team finished more than a pound ahead of the nearest competition, Ryan Crowley of Jacksonville and Chris Church of Sherwood, Arkansas, whose combined weight of 23.97 pounds, won second place. John Kremer and Travis Kremer, both of Sanford, Florida, finished a close third at 23.57 pounds.
In the Big Bass competition, second place tournament winners Ryan Crowley and Chris Church, caught an 11.33-pound bass and took home first prize and $5,000. Stephen Bishop of Deland, Florida, and Dell Massie from Belle Isle, Florida, finished second in the Big Bass competition at 9.26 pounds, and Daniel Gaskins and Josh Gaskins, both from Lake City, won third place with 8.37 pounds.
Competition was tight in the Lads and Lasses tournament, but first place went to Jeremy and Sarah Tate from Summerfield, Florida, whose aggregate weight was 25.33. Second place went to David and Barbara Burch from Jacksonville Beach with a weight of 22.16, and Brent Meyers and Sarah Cooley from Palatka claimed third place with 22.04 pounds.
The winner in the drawing for the 21-foot, fully rigged 2017 Bullet 21XRD with Boatmate trailer and Mercury 225 Pro XS motor was Joshua Wisham of Palatka.
The Wolfson Children’s Hospital Bass Tournament – second largest bass tournament in the nation – continues to grow each year. In 2016, 688 registered boats and 1,376 fishermen participated. To date, the tournament has raised more than $4 million to help provide for the educational needs of patients and staff, and to purchase life-saving technology for the infants, children and young adults in our care.
