October 12
1A-Wildwood (4-3) at 4A-Keystone Heights (2-3)
(Wildwood 28, KHHS 14)
Keystone Heights comes off rugged fourth quarter loss to Crescent City. Key players have to heal up and be ready to go. Tough call.
7A-Oakleaf (4-2) at 4A-Raines (5-1)
(Raines 26, OHS 12)
Oakleaf chewing big chunks of season with rugged non-district schedule bent on preparing team for district run and region playoffs. Trinity Christian was able to throw on Knights defense. Raines is defending 4A champions with their own senior running back (Brandon Marshall) and two senior wide outs. Much like Oakleaf, big run game, pop in big passes. Another shootout possible.
5A-Ridgeview (3-4) at 5A-Clay (1-5)
(CHS 32, RHS 27)
Key district showdown. Clay is rested. Ridgeview is questioning from loss to Middleburg; Huff just 100 yards passing, three interceptions. Game is rivalry with a slim chance of playoff implication. And, it is at Clay. Both are just outside the top eight in playoff points rankings.
6A-Middleburg (2-4) at 6A-Nease (0-6)
(Nease 24, MHS 33)
Who’da thunk at 2-4 Middleburg could reverse slow start and get to playoffs again? Broncos thumped Ridgeview with aggressive pass defense. Joe Justino is getting better. Nease has had little scoring in their six losses; 6-5 loss to Matanzas? Really? Move up in district 4-6A possible for Broncos. With upsets (of sorts) over St. Augustine and in makeup game with Ed White, Broncos could sneak into playoffs. Stay tuned. Smeltzer did it once before.
5A-Orange Park (5-1) at 5A-Baker County (5-1)
(Baker County 14, OPHS 10)
This could be game of the century in a very hostile Baker County environment with the coach implications (Macpherson fired from Baker County three years ago). Orange Park is hungry to prove its mettle. This is the game for that. District 5-5A title on the line for both teams. Both are in top eight in playoff power points also.
7A-Fleming Island (3-3) at 7A-Bartram Trail (4-2)
(FIHS 18, BTHS 14)
Fleming Island is dangerous and has shot their own foot in their losses this season with overtime loss to Buchholz, dropped passes against Oakleaf. Now’s the time to put the four quarters together. McBride may be back in backfield and that will help. Fleming Island needs this and help for playoffs. Season final against Orange Park (if 9-1) could be fateful.
IND-SJCDS (2-4) at 2A-Oak Hall (3-3)
(SJCDS 12, Oak Hall 10)
Oak Hall is chasing top dog St. Joseph Academy in North Florida Football Standings. St. Johns has been playing outstanding ball with limited roster and could upset the apple cart with a win (upset of sorts) here. Chipoletti is squeezing as much Lemonade as seemingly possible to put Spartans program in good stead. Spartans lost 41-13 to St. Joseph in Friday clash to give St. Joseph a berth in the North Florida Football Conference championship game. St. Johns got three turnovers against St. Joseph with a blocked kick also so the Spartans play true to form with outstanding effort for four quarters. With a win here, a probable win next week in Georgia, Chipoletti may get his .500 season. Final game with Aucilla Christian (6-1) will be tough sendoff to season one.
Go big or go home week with district lineups tightening up. Knights take on 4A state champion Raines in non-district biggie. Spartans catch historically strong Oak Hall on rebuild year. Macpherson gets shot at Baker County upset with holster full of weapons. Fleming Island faces the Bears’ jinx. Middleburg? What? Again, the Broncos can sneak in. In 5A, Ridgeview vs. Clay. Oh My!!
Game of the Week
Clay hunkers down with good old fashion handoffs and defense, Clay 32, RHS 27. Kenneth Johnson, Devore shuts down RHS jet sweeps.
