ORANGE PARK – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit has released the name of the infant that died last week after an investigation that began at a Clay County motel.

Police said nine-month-old Charli May Lee Smith was transported to Orange Park Medical Center, where she later died. The case began at the Intown Suites at 442 Blanding Blvd. around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 4.

CCSO Public Information Officer Mary Justino said the Department of Children and Families has placed with a relative the infant’s two-year-old sister.

No arrests have been made and the cause of death is still under investigation while the Jacksonville Medical Examiner’s office completes an autopsy on the infant’s body.

Police have interviewed the child’s mother, Ashley Smith, 22, and her boyfriend, Mathew Hamrysky, 26, who were living together at the motel. Hamrysky was also watching the infant when the child required transporting to the hospital.

Police have given few details on why the child needed medical attention.
