The Board of County Commissioners approved spending $495,400 to upgrade a list of eight priority roads in the county.

The Florida Chapter of the American Public Works Association named the Town of Orange Park’s $10 million wastewater treatment system upgrade “Environmental Project of the Year.”

Orange Park High sophomore Leonard Whittney won first place in the senior division of the Concert on the Green poster contest. His artwork “Mystic Piano” was to be used as the concert’s official 2012 poster.

In Orange Park Town Council elections, James “J.B.” Renninger defeated Eugene Nix by garnering 54 percent of the votes. Renninger would replace his wife Phyllis Renninger who could not run again due to term limits.

Acting on a request from Orange Park Town Council, the Clay County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution stating their opposition to a card room at Orange Park Kennel Club despite the Club not having applied for a permit. Commissioners said they wanted to take a stand.

Clay County Farm Bureau and the Clay County Cattlemen’s Association led local officials and the media on a seven-site tour that showcased the county’s agricultural economy.

20 years ago, 1997

The Clay County School Board voted 3-2 on a measure presented by Superintendent David Owens to eliminate three top-level administrative positions in the district office.

B.J. Winchester, president of the multi-racial social group Unity, presented the Orange Park Library with 100 books about diversity. The books were bought with grant funds donated by Delores Barr Weaver who attended the event and read one of the books to children.

Life Care Centers of America said its new $5 million center at Wells Crossing in Orange Park was 75 percent complete and would soon begin hiring for 110 new jobs.

30 years ago, 1987

Clyde Beatty-Cole Brother Circus made its way into the Orange Park area in preparation for a weekend performance under the bigtop on the football field at Orange Park High.

The Board of County Commissioners turned down a $43,000 request for funds from Orange Park Town Council to aid in building a park in the Grove Park area.

Gov. Bob Martinez pledged at a meeting of the Clay County Committee of 100 that his administration will aggressively pursue new industries and build the roads that will move their products to market.

40 years ago, 1977

Officers from the Orange Park Police Department seized more than 39 pounds of cannabis worth an estimated $13,000 during a stakeout at a local motel. Charged were John Martin Brewer, Ronald Lee Rowe and Arthur Carl Garbison, all of North Judson, Indiana.

Speaking at the 39th annual meeting of the Clay Electric Co-operative in Keystone Heights, U.S. Senator Richard Stone(D-Fla.) blamed the spiraling cost of gasoline on the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and called for deregulation of the U.S. gas and oil industries.

Clay County’s volunteer and paid fire units responded to 234 fire calls in 1976 in a report that was used to set fire insurance rates, response times and how to coordinate fire and rescue activities.
