Orange Park Town Council voted 3-2 to expedite the retirement for Town Manager Cindy Hall who had planned to leave her post Dec. 31. However, council members Steve Howard, Gary Meeks and Scott Land voted yes, and members Jim Renninger and Marge Hutton voted against the measure to have Hall leave Oct. 31.

Justin and Kelly Mosley opened the Amazing Grace Crop Maze as a fall time family fun activity at 2500 Sandridge Rd. in the Lak Asbury area.

The Justice Coalition of Jacksonville honored Claire Bailey with its “Exceptional Hero” award for work she performed as the first member of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office program called Volunteers in Police Service.

A Clay County jury took only 48 minutes to recommend the death penalty for 29-year-old Gary Bernard McCray Jr. for shooting John Ellis, 51; Phillip Perotta, 53; Robin Selkirk, 45; and John Whitehead, 37, in an Orange Park area crack house on Blanding Boulevard in August 2004.

Orange Park Town Manager John Bowles said a revenue shortfall was the reason the town was forced to lay off eight employees and freeze hiring on other vacant positions. No police or fire and rescue employees were let go.

The Salvation Army of Clay County opened a new thrift store at 2221 County Rd. 220 in Doctors Inlet in the Silos Shopping Center.

Economic development consultant Steve Kelly of Florida Planning Group told the Board of County Commissioners that high numbers of commuting workers, dependence on the residential tax base to fund services and lack of economic growth and opportunity will result in a lower quality of life in Clay County if not addressed by creating a business incentives expansion and retention program.

Clay County Fire and Rescue Capt. Mike Swartz and Capt. Ron Hildum joined Green Cove Springs firefighter Will Glisson and Orange Park firefighter Pete Darr to travel to Key West to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Georges.

Four months after a 10-day voyage on Space Shuttle Discovery, NASA Astronaut Dominic L. Pudwill Gorie addressed students at Fleming Island Elementary.

Two-term incumbent George A. Bush announced he would seek a third term on the Clay County School Board District 2 Seat.

Green Cove Springs City Council unanimously approved its new budget that set the millage rate at 2.611 mills, which reflected a 20.6 percent increase before considering the rolled back rate.

Renee E. Daigle, daughter of John L. and Jane C. Daigle, of Green Cove Springs, was accepted into the U.S. Military Academy’s Corps of Cadets.

Orange Park Town Council set its property tax millage rate at 3.4 mills that would bring in a projected $405,563 for an increase of $97,059 from its 1977-78 budget.

The Clay County Development Authority board voted to accept Gate Petroleum of Jacksonville’s $6,000 per acre offer to buy four acres of land in the CCDA’s industrial park south of Green Cove Springs off U.S. Highway 17.

The Green Cove Springs Police Department investigated the shooting death of 80-year-old George Barnes of 207 Oakridge Ave. whose body was discovered with a gunshot to his chest on his bedroom floor.
