Orange Park Town Council considered moving $600,000 from its reserve fund to balance its 2012-13 budget before taking a final vote on the new spending plan.

Faced with a 25.8 percent drop in property valuations in the wake of the Great Recession, Green Cove Springs City Council considered a 16 percent property tax increase for its 2013 fiscal year budget.

The Clay County School District named Charles E. Bennett Elementary School Principal Evelyn Chastain its “Principal of the Year” and Oakleaf High Vice Principal Michelle Daly its “Vice Principal of the Year.”

The Clay County School District filed an updated long-range plan with the Florida Department of Education that called for spending $8825 million to build 24 new schools through 2027.

Meanwhile, the district braced for a cut in state funds due to a $1 billion shortfall in states sales tax collections after passing a $451 million budget that included $83 million for capital improvements.

Jacksonville punk metal band Evergreen Terrace came to Lake Asbury to film the music video for its song “Chaney Can’t Rift Like Helmet’s Page Hamilton.”

The Green Cove Springs Police Department contracted with Jeff’s Excavating to raze a house at the corner of Washington Street and Middleburg Avenue that was a haven for drug activity.

The Crossings at Fleming Island Community Development District officially turned over operation of its water and sewer system to Clay County Utility Authority.

Sharon Marsh, a teacher at Grove Park Elementary School, was named Educator of the Year by the organization Clay County Children and Attention Deficit Disorder.

The Clay County School Board voted to 3-2 to rescind a previous vote to establish a $900 per home impact fee on new residential construction.

The Florida Department of Revenue ruled a new 2-cent gas tax hike was legal despite it being approved after the July 1 deadline.

Clay County Clerk of Court George Carlisle, who also served as the county comptroller, said the Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigative fund was not overdrawn after conducting the fund’s first-ever audit.

40 years ago, 1977
The Green Cove Springs City Council passed a recommendation from the city’s planning board to approved plans to build two apartment complexes that would include 51 apartments at Roberts Street and Melrose Avenue.

The Clay County Planning and Zoning Board approved a special use zoning for a proposed recreation area at Blanding Boulevard and Old Jennings Road that would include six lighted tennis courts, skeet and trap shooting, an archery range and a bait and fly-casting pond.

Walnut Street in downtown Green Cove Springs was set to undergo a landscaping beautification project after the city was awarded $140,000 from the Comprehensive Employment Training Act. The funds would hire 14 workers who had previously been on unemployment compensation.
