Clay County Commissioner Ronnie Robinson organized Clay County Citizens Against Big League Dreams after County Auditor Mike Price told commissioners it would cost $25 million to build and take 75-to-125 years to pay off the bonds needed to fund construction.

Orange Park Medical Center CEO Tom Pentz announced he would retire from his job and the hospital’s parent company at the end of the year.

Despite growing grassroots opposition, the County Board of Commissioners voted 3-1 to set aside $19 million to build a Big League Dreams sports complex in the event the BCC actually approves a contract with the Chino Hills, Calif.-based company.

Lt. Dan Lee of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed that a primate reported on the loose in the Eagle Landing community in Oakleaf was either a snow or Japanese macaque monkey.

Price General Contractors joined county commissioners and staff to host a ceremonial groundbreaking for a project to straighten out a dangerous “near 90-degree” curve on Wells Road.

The Clay County Chamber of Commerce relinquished its role as the county’s chief tourism promoter saying those duties will head back back to the county government beginning Oct. 1, to coincide with the start of the new fiscal year.

School Superintendent David Owens said he would recommend to the Clay County School Board that Orange Park Elementary stay open at least four more years, thwarting a plan that had discussed for months.

Several homes on Ravenswood Road were evacuated to allow firefighters to create fire lines to fend off a wildfire that would eventually destroy 1,000 acres in Clay County.

Property Appraiser Wayne Weeks said the taxable value of all property in Clay County had risen 6.73 percent over 1997’s valuation for a total value of $226 million.

With County Commissioner Wayne Spivey dissenting, the BCC appointed County Coordinator Robert Taylor as the interim county administrator.

Orange Park Police Chief J.H. Tillman said the double murder of Ester F. Harris, 40, of Jacksonville, and Jacqueline B. Peton, 40, of Orange Park, appeared to be a love triangle. 51-year-old Samuel King, who lived with Peton at 408 Libra Lane, was charged with murder.

A Clay County Grand Jury indicted Rodney Mark Greene, 14, for first-degree murder in the shooting death of his father, Tommy Joe Greene, 39, which had first been determined to be accidental.

After appealing one denial of their plan to open a lounge and package store across Blanding Boulevard from First Baptist Church of Middleburg, Middleburg Investments Inc. received a second rejection from the County’s Planning Zoning and Building Commission in a 4-1 vote.
