A three-month investigation by security of¬ficers at the Clay County Jail uncovered a ring accused of smuggling contraband into the pre-trial center at the request of inmates. The contraband was being concealed at three different county sites where it would be picked up by inmate trustees and taken back to the jail for consumption.

After a two-month vacancy, Clay County welcomed Rose Claridydavis as its new Veterans Services Officer.

Using the unforgettable beat of the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive,” officials from St. Vincent’s Medical Center taught CPR to students at Plantation Oaks Elementary School.

Nicholas de Leon, an eighth grader at Green Cove Springs Junior High, won the Regional Spelling Bee in Jacksonville and a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May by correctly spelling “pantomime.”

Clay County Supervisor of Elections Barbara Kirkman announced should was retiring after 11 years in the position.

The Clay Board of County Commissioners passed a residential impact fee after months of debate, study and consideration. Area homebuilders opposed the move.

Clay County Sheriff’s deputies arrested James A. Tyler on charges of bank robbery at an undisclosed location in Bradford County. He allegedly robbed the South Trust Bank at 1939 Wells Rd.

Hilda Singleton, a professional development assistant in the Clay County School District’s instructional division, was named 1998 School-Related Employee of the Year.

Two storms brought torrential rain to the Middleburg area causing Black Creek to flood homes on Scenic Drive.

The Town of Orange Park debated an ordinance to require residents to separate their recyclables from their trash, a move Public Works Director Howard Green said would save the town $40,000 per year in dumping fees.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged Joseph Dwayne Parker of Clay Hill with the rape and abduction of a 17-year-old girl that took place in a wooded area near County Roads 209 and 739B.

The Clay County School Board held separate groundbreaking ceremonies for physical education facilities at its four junior high schools – Lakeside, Wilkinson, Ridgeview and Orange Park.

40 years ago, 1978
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged Patrick Anthony Brewer, 18, of the Ridgewod area, with first-degree murder after an investigation found he stabbed Tsuyako “Susie” Thomas at her sandwich shop at 927 Blanding Blvd.

City fire department officials blamed an electric heater for causing a fire at a home at 1103 Cypress St. in Green Cove Springs that claimed the life of 47-year-old Virginia Williams.

The Green Cove Springs City Council voted to pay $50,000 down to buy 350 acres of land from the Reinhold Corp. in order to establish a landfill at Rosemary Hill. The land sold for $1,000 per acre.
