The Board of County Commissioners approved a rezoning for Taylor Commons on the site of Kings Tree Apartments. A planned development of Louis L. Huntley Enterprises, the project calls for 89 residential units, 60,300 square feet of retail and office space and a three-tier parking garage for 178 cars.

National technology education company eInstruction awarded $75,000 worth of technology upgrades to the music and technology programs at Annunciation Catholic School.

Skot Wilson of Orange Park wrote letters convincing the BCC to approve the donation of two used sheriff’s patrol cars to the police department in Union City, New Jersey whose 14 patrol cars were damaged in the fury of Super Storm Sandy on October 2012.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated the fatal shooting of Buddy Eugene Pickett who was shot multiple times, mostly in the chest, by Jonathan David Williams, 32, who was wielding a 30-06 rifle. Pickett died trying to collect a $30 debt.

On Jan. 26, a year after her death, friends of slain veterinary tech Andrea Boyer held a candlelight vigil for her at Wells Road Veterinary Medical Center where her body was found.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office charged Christopher Sanchez-Perales and James Anthony Fortes with aggravated battery after a violent fight where at least one victim was stabbed and another shot. The fight took place at Paul Armstrong Park on County Road 220.

20 years ago, 1998
Fleming Island Elementary first grade teacher Lindsay Henderson was named Clay County Teacher of the Year and was awarded a $500 grant from Walmart.

Clay County School Superintendent David Owens announced a plan to close Orange Park Elementary and move the school’s concept learning model to Montclair Elementary beginning with the start of the 2000 school year.

Howard I. Korman, owner of Orange Park Kennel Club, withdrew his controversial plan to establish a poker room at the local dog track.

30 years ago, 1988
Orange Park Town Council named Town Clerk Joyce Bryan temporary town manager after the resignation of Town Manager Larry Myers.

Orange Park Police Chief Dalton Bray announced his candidacy for sheriff of Clay County.

Lynda Marie Merritt, 31, of Orange Park, became the first fatality of 1988 in Clay County after the car in which she was a passenger crossed the center line and struck a second vehicle on Wells Road.

40 years ago, 1978
The Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to accept a plan from Sheriff Jennings Murrhee to spend $273,000 to expand the county jail by 4,000 square feet.

Hunting club members spoke out against an update to the county’s animal control ordinance and how it regulates dogs running at large. The BCC voted to send the ordinance back to county staff for further review considering hunt club members concerns.

Judge Lamar Winegeart accepted a guilty plea from Joseph Sylvester Asbell, then-34, who was charged with sexual battery of a five-year-old. He would be sentenced a month later.
