Sage sisters, Moody lead girls; McDaniels, Kailes lead boys

JACKSONVILLE – Corey McDaniels in the 400 meters and twins Courtney in the 300 hurdles and Kendall Sage in the 100 meters led the St. Johns Country Day School boys and girls track teams to second place team finishes at the district 4-1A track championships Tuesday and Thursday at Bishop Snyder High School. The meet was split two days due to inclement weather. Track runners competed in an and off drenchings Tuesday morning while field events were done on Thursday.

The region 1-1A championships, where top four finishers advanced to the state meet in Bradenton, will be held at Florida High in Tallahassee April 25.

With 128 points, Bishop Snyder won the boys team title with St. Johns scoring 66 for second. Providence was a close third with 64 points.

In the girls team race, Providence scored 122 to win with St. Johns second at 71, a point better than Bishop Snyder’s 70 for third.

St. Johns lone boys winner was sprinter Corey McDaniels who bested the 400 meters field with a 52.33 second clocking with teammate Jett Isley, second last year in 52.16, fourth place in 53.29. Atregions last year, Jett ran 52.57 to advance to the state meet. Jett was 13th at state at 53.37.

McDaniels returned to the track to also take second in the 200 in 23.47 behind Snyder’s Jalen Chance who won in 22.79.

Sage, the defending district champ in the 100 meters, but ninth at regions last year, out leaned Florida Deaf’s Oceana Brown with a 13.46 to win with Brown in at 13.48 and third placer Madison Davenport of Christ’s Church third in 13.49 in a finish line flurry. Sage beat Brown in 2017’s district 100 meters.

In the girls 300 hurdles, Courtney Sage won convincingly in 46.19 over Elizabeth Crosby of Providence, who clocked 47.95. Providence’s Kendall Johnson won the district final over Sage last year with Crosby third. Crosby eventually won the region title over Johnson. Sage, injured prior to the state meet last year, opted out of the 100 hurdles, but finished third in the 300 hurdles in 45.73 with Crosby fourth. Johnson, a senior, took second.

Sage also finished third in the 100 hurdles to repeat last year’s finish. Crosby finished second in the 100 hurdles last year then the duo repeated the 2-3 finish at regions.

Finishing in top four places to advance for St. Johns were Ben Kailes in the 1600 in 4:39.56, just behind winner Sean Snyder of St. Joseph who won in 4:39.38 and got second in the 800; hurdler Joseph Hale, who repeated his third in the 110 high hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles in 46.30; and Matthew Stratton who surged to take fourth in the 3200 in 10:43.50 with Snyder winning in 10:09.72.

Stratton and Kailes both advanced last year in the 3200; going third and fourth. Kailes and Stratton took sixth and seventh at the region meet.

For the girls, other top four finishers included Juliet Moody, second in the 800 in 2:32.01 just behind Halle Grzebin of Providence who won in 2:30.40 and Ava Johnson in the 400, fourth in 1:03.10. Moody was second last year in the 800 as a sixth grader with Grzebin third before finishing fifth at regions with Grezebin second.

In relays, St Johns girls 4 x 800 finished second to Providence with the boys 4 x 800 fourth with the girls 4 x 400 taking second to Providence and the boys 4 x 400 also second to Bishop Snyder.

One field event athlete; Lauryn Mateo, advanced to regions with a fourth in the high jump at 4’-6”.
