The Spartans of St. Johns Country Day School, intent on fulfilling coach Tom Lucas' philosophy of playing big against the biggies, stroked the genius of the thought with a 2-1 win over 8A-Oakleaf on April 18 and a 5-3 win over 6A-Ridgeview on April 19 with three seventh inning runs to complete a week of tough defense and timely hitting by the Spartans. St. Johns, 13-8, 6-2, had beaten district foe Oak Hall 7-4 on April 13 to grasp the number two spot in district 2-3A with University Christian's two wins over the Spartans the difference between one and two. St. Joseph's Academy is at 4-4 in district play.

Against Ridgeview, Tyler Grogg bashed for two runs batted in while Jacob Asdot issued just two strikeouts but got stellar defense from his infield to keep the Panther batters at bay.

In the three-run seventh, Evan Engelbrecht bunted to score Jacob Hodges who singled after a strikeout to Cody Myers from Ridgeview pitcher A. Messineo. A single from Troy Myers pushed pinch baserunner Tyler Zellem to third before an error on an Asdot grounder gave the Spartans at 4-3 lead. Grogg got a grounder to shortstop to score Englebrecht for the final run.

Against Oakleaf, St. Johns tied the game 1-1 in the fifth inning then held before taking the 2-1 lead off Knights' senior reliever Chris Mauloni in the seventh inning after an Hodges single and a bunt from Hunter Russell put Hodges at second with Hodges stealing third and scoring off an error from Oakleaf catcher Vinnie Caldas.

St. Johns took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off a Hodges grounder to left field scored Zellem who was running for catcher Tyler Kuramoto who was walked by pitcher Blain Jones.

Oakleaf's lone run on Spartans' pitcher Troy Britts came from a Kobe Branch double, a single from Tristan Adams and a Ian Marler bunt in the fifth inning.

Against Oak Hall (5-12, 4-4), Englebrech threw for five strikeouts with Kuramoto hitting for two runs to fuel th Spartans' district win as St. Johns scored all seven runs in the fifth inning.

In the inning, Asdot doubled, Grogg singled for a run, Kuramoto hit a two-run double, Hodges hit an RBI-double and Hunter Russell hit an RBI single for the barrage. Russell stole home for the seventh run in a double steal with Englebrecht.
