Soccer ace wins Butterfly 5K

ORANGE PARK - With soccer friends and family joining him in the Pink Ribbon Symposium Butterfly Race held Saturday at Orange Park Town Hall, former local soccer ace Jacob Hess blasted the field in the annual 3.1 mile journey around Orange Park.

Hess, 27, a Ridgeview High soccer standout and also a Oxford College of Emory (GA) soccer standout, took off from the start, gapped the field by 150 yards within the first half mile, then cruised in to win in 18 minutes, 57 seconds to outdistance runnerup Jack Gosselin, 17, in at 20:30. Third place wento to local runner Omron Wallizada, 26, in 21:04.

Also in the field with Hess were uncle Tony Davis, 52, who finished 11th in 22:51, and cousin Connor Davis, 22, a soccer standout at Fleming Island, who finished seventh in 22:25. Both Hess and Davis played for Clay County Soccer.

For the women, Heather Thompson, 44, a Fleming Island High cross country coach and mom of track standout Katie Thompson, a Fleming Island senior, won in 22:47 and placed 10th overall in the 218 finisher field.

!st Place Sports of Jacksonville staged the event to benefit National Cancer Survivor Day festivities.

For the females, behind Thompson were Dena Begle, 38, in 19th in 25:10 and sisters Eve and Emma Schlotthauer, 12 and 16, who finished a second apart in third and fourth, respectively, in 26:13 and 26:14. Begle was age group winner in 30-39.

In the adjoining one mile kids run, Jacob Reid, 5, was male winner with Tobi Idowu, 6, the female winner.
