FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High’s track and cross country team suffered a traumatic loss with the suicide death of sophomore Maddi Stevenson early this year on January 25, and a host of area runners, including members of the Fleming Island High track teams, honored Stevenson with the first Maddi Mile as part of the annual Fleming Island 5K festivities Sat., May 12.

“Maddi was a spirited and funny girl as well as a powerful runner,” said Fleming Island coach Chris Otero, as he introduced Michelle Kahlig, Maddi’s mother, prior to the Maddi Mile. “She will be missed.”

For Kahlig, the ceremonial mile offered a bit of a surprise.

“I was having people walk up to me and saying they heard of Maddi and wanted to show support at the run,” said Kahlig. “It was overwhelming how many people came out.”

Overall winner was Fleming Island High freshman Kameron Wallizada with a time of 17 minutes, 11 seconds ahead of Fleming Island High senior Aidan Amstutz at 18:07. John Webb, 47, was third in 18:21.

For the women, Fleming Island veteran runner Sharon Hawley, 31, was top female in 20:41 for 11th overall. Erika Olson, 24, was second female at 21:29 with Green Cove Springs Junior High eighth grader Lauren Schaudel third female at 21:44.

The race was staged at Fleming Island High by 1st Place Sports of Jacksonville with results on the 1st Place Sports website.
