ORANGE PARK – As second year head coach Tom MacPherson addressed his Orange Park High football team after a tough 48-12 loss to Bishop Kenny, he impressed on his young team the importance of situational football.
“We need to get better at understanding situational football,” MacPherson said. “We gave up two long touchdowns passes on third and 16 that can’t happen.”
The Raiders did show their ability to score quick as well as junior quarterback A.J. Mealer connected on long TD passes to wideouts Marquise Brown and Terrance Johnson.
“A.J. is our leader,” said MacPherson. “He is going to have to make plays for us and he showed that tonight.”
Junior running back Zykiem Sermons and Johnson took most of the carries and looked good.
On defense, the Raiders start six sophomores so the learning curve will be steep.
“We threw every coverage and scheme at them to see how they would respond,” said MacPherson. “We are a work in progress but we will get there.”
Junior linebacker Deonte Domenick recorded six tackles and forced a fumble while Kendy Charles registered five tackles in one half of work. Cason Jackson added a fumble recovery.
Orange Park will host Oakleaf Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Hoty B Cotny Stadium.
“We need to show them that we belong on the same field with them,” said MacPherson. “The last two times we played them they beat us pretty good.”
