Suicide threat ends in arrest
OAKLEAF – What began as police responding to a call from a woman who had threatened multiple times to kill herself, ended with officers drawing their weapons and shout at the woman before her arrest.
Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Wendy Elaine Stokes, 50, of Middleburg, on July 28 at 3:04 p.m. after going to her home on Trail Ridge Road.
According to the police report, when officers arrived, Stokes “had been in possession of a weapon” while sitting in her vehicle “short of the driveway on the north side of the roadway.” The officer said he heard Stokes rev her engine and drive backwards out of the property where she ended up halfway over the curb on Trail Ridge.
Police said the responding officer was standing adjacent to his rear patrol car door while Stokes’ vehicle was pointed directly at him.
The officer drew his service weapon and pointed it at Stokes and gave her loud verbal commands to shut off the vehicle.
“The offender gunned the engine and drove towards him causing him to retreat to the rear of his vehicle for cover,” states the report.
Police said Stokes then drove past the officer, slammed on her brakes and stopped. Police said Stokes rolled down her window and yelled at officers before fleeing at a high rate of speed down Trail Ridge Road. Police said Stokes refused to stop as officers chased her vehicle down Discovery and Challenger, the access roads to the First Coast Expressway. She struck several vehicles as she drove to her home on Trail Ridge where officers arrested her.
Stokes is charged with one count each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, failure to obey law enforcement order to stop. At press time, she remained in the Clay County Jail with bond set at $20,006.
