Utility Authority conducting emergency repair
DOCTORS INLET – The Clay County Utility Authority began an emergency repair project on a gravity sewer main on County Road 220 on Aug. 15.
The repair requires accessing the sewer main that is approximately 20 feet deep under the road. To ensure crews can safely and efficiently make this repair, traffic will be modified along the highlighted portion of County Road 220 on the map. Traffic in both directions along County Road 220 from Black Creek Park-n-Ride to Yarmouth Drive will be impacted for approximately four weeks weather permitting.
One week of maintenance will involve traffic and staging, two weeks will be needed for the repair and one week for maintenance of traffic tear down and restoration. Drivers are asked to allow extra travel time and pay close attention to the traffic signs in the area.

Drug deal ends in assault, arrest
FLEMING ISLAND – What began as a meetup to buy marijuana in the parking lot of a 7 Eleven store on County Road 22 in Middleburg ended badly Monday for a Middleburg man.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Cody Allen Dales, 19, of Middleburg on Aug. 14 at 2:22 p.m.
According to the police report, Dales had agreed to meet the victim at the convenience store on Aug. 3 where Dales was supposed to sell marijuana to the victim.
The victim told police that when he arrived at the store, he was jumped and Dales struck him in the head and face with what appeared to be a metal object. The victim also told CCSO that Dales stole $200 in cash and his cell phone from him during the attack.
Police interviewed the victim at the emergency room at Baptist Clay on Fleming Island two days after he was allegedly jumped on County Road 220.
At press time, Dales remained in the Clay County Jail where his bond is set at $50,003.

Man charged with showing sex videos to 11-year-old
ORANGE PARK – Court officials have set the bond at $500,006 for an Orange Park area man who is accused of showing pornographic videos to an 11-year-old girl.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jule Andre Larose, 30, on Aug. 14 at 5:32 p.m. after obtaining a warrant during the investigation.
According to the warrant, Larose has living in the home with the child’s family and that the inappropriate behavior had been going on for at least two years.
In January, the victim told investigators from the CCSO Special Victim’s Section that Larose “has asked her to do inappropriate behaviors, touched her breast and buttocks, and has shown her videos of people have ‘s-e-x’ on his cell phone.”
Another family member in the home told police she had witnessed Larose climb into bed with the victim.
At press time, Larose remained in the Clay County Jail.

Jax man charged with destroying Vystar ATM
ORANGE PARK – The Financial Crimes Unit of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office has charged a Jacksonville man with felony criminal mischief for allegedly destroying a VyStar Credit Union ATM.
CCSO arrested James Michael Taylor, 58, of Jacksonville, on Aug 14 at 9:07 a.m. using a warrant they obtained from Judge Don Lester.
According to the warrant, Taylor caused $2,300 worth of damage to an ATM at the VyStar Arora Boulevard branch off Blanding Boulevard on July 29.
Police said Taylor damaged the pin pad face plate by removing it and causing the automated teller to be inoperable.
He is currently out of jail on bond.

Former C-store employee robs store
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Police said a former employee of a Circle K convenience store faces one count of armed robbery after going into the store and demanding money.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Thomas Allen Bushey, 26, of Green Cove Springs, on Aug. 12 at 2:39 a.m. and charged him with armed robbery.
According to the police report, Bushey fled the store at 2000 State Rd. 16 West near Clay High with $112 cash. Police said Bushey’s former co-workers helped identify him. Police dogs led officers to Bushey’s home where he was questioned and then arrested.
He was booked into the Clay County Jail where, at press time, he remained held with bond set at $50,003.

Man gets struck in head with shotgun
MIDDLEBURG – Authorities have charged a man with assault and battery during burglary after he attempted to break into a home to talk to his estranged former girlfriend.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Robert Bairos Costa, 35, of Middleburg, on Aug. 10 at 1:15 a.m. after he allegedly forced his way into a home in the 2900 block of Stonegate Lane.
According to the police report, Costa entered the home to get access to his former girlfriend – who is pregnant – had gone there to stay with friends so she could be safe and away from Costa. Police said there are at least four different cases in which Costa has threatened the victim and she had to call law enforcement.
When Costa entered the home, the homeowner was standing ready with a shotgun that he used to strike Costa in the face. Using the gun’s stock, the man hit Costa twice in the face in an attempt to get him to leave. Police said Costa appeared intoxicated when he approached the home.
Police captured Costa at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Clay County and booked him into the Clay County Jail where he has since been released on bond.

Auto theft charge for OP man
ORANGE PARK – An Orange Park area man is charged with allegedly stealing his roommate’s truck, abandoning it and then setting it on fire seven blocks away from their residence.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Michael Curtis Bardin, 45, on Aug. 9 and charged him with grand theft auto. The following day, police charged Bardin with one count of felony arson after an investigation by State Fire Marshal James Little.
According to the police report, Bardon stole his roommate’s 2006 Nissan truck and abandoned it at 382 Aries Drive in the Aquarius Concourse neighborhood west of Orange Park. Police responded to the fire at 5:10 a.m. where they assisted Clay County Fire Rescue as firefighters extinguished the blaze.
By 6:17 a.m., officers went to where Bardin lived in the 500 block of Blairmore Boulevard West and interviewed Bardin about charges he had on different outstanding warrants. A search of his home found various piece of drug paraphernalia and less than 20 grams of marijuana. Along with the arson charge, Bardon faces one count each of possession of not more than 20 g. cannabis, drug equipment possession and grand theft auto. He also has two charges for violation of probation. He is being held in the Clay County Jail without bond.

Orange Park man awaits next court date for sex charge
GREEN COVE SPRINGS – An Orange Park man who was extradited from the Volusia County Jail on Aug. 3 remains in custody.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Shawn Michael Culbertson, 23, and charged him with one count of lewd and lascivious behavior on a victim age 12 to 16.
According to the arrest warrant approved by Judge John H. Skinner, Culbertson had sexual activity with the victim at least two times between June 7 and June 9.
Police said the victim told her mother on June 10 that she lost her virginity to Culbertson and initially told police she was sexually battered by Culbertson both times.
Already in the Clay County Jail on one charge of battery and vandalism, detectives approached Culbertson about the lewd and lascivious accusation from the victim.
In the meantime, the victim also told police that both times she had sex with Culbertson it was consensual.
At press time, Culbertson remained held on $50,003 bond.
