GREEN COVE SPRINGS - Former Clay High softball coach Roger Harvey, now the head guy for Ridgeview High's softball squad, turned the tables on his former home with a 2-1 ninth-inning district 4-6A win Tuesday night over former bossman Matt Lewis. Harvey got a ninth inning RBI hit from Sarah Anderson for the win.
Ridgeview moves on to the district final against Ponte Vedra High, a 13-3 winner over Orange Park, and last year's runnerup to Clay High.
“This bunch has a real determination that just won’t quit," said Harvey. "We’ve got nothing flashy, we’ve got nothing special as far as hidden weapons. We just go straight at them."
Through four innings, the teams remained scoreless. Ridgeview would break through first to score.
Clay would make an error that allowed Panther KK Southerland to stay on base. When Alyssa Adams followed her with a triple, it scored the RBI as Southerland made her way home for the first score of the game. Even with leaving bases loaded to end the inning, the Panthers never backed off.
Clay tied the game in the sixth inning with Marianne McDonald getting to first after getting hit with a pitch. McDonald was pushed around the bases by Allison Bird and Hailey Stone. Sydney Lewis would get the RBI to score McDonald. During the play, Stone was sent from second to third and was picked off with a throw that skipped the cutoff. Ridgeview retired the inning, but not before Clay tied the game. In the eighth, both teams left runners on base and we rolled into the ninth inning.
In the ninth, Raven Little led off with a single, followed by Cheyanne Vincent getting walked with no outs. Reggie Boyd sacrifice bunted the runners to the next base, followed by Sarah Anderson who belted a shot down third base to score the RBI, bringing Little home. Ridgeview left two on base at the innings end, but the damage was done.
The Devils could do no better than get one girl on base with two outs and Clay’s season came to an abrupt end.
