ORANGE PARK – Ridgeview High’s girls basketball team is still riding an historic first in opening the 2018 season with six straight wins including a Monday 57-23 drubbing of Santa Fe High School.

Led by a fast-paced attack quarterbacked by guard Brittany Sutton and usually ending with Trenity Gilford landing a layup, the Panthers have used a swarming defense and breakaways to offset enemy size.

“We are not that big up front, but these girls play as a cohesive unit at all spots on the floor,” said coach Trent Gilford, now 6-0, and anticipating a district 4-6A showdown with Orange Park High (5-2) on Thurs., Dec. 13 for a possible district top spot. “Our general is senior Heavun McCarver out there as she directs traffic.”

Against Santa Fe, Gilford got 19 first half points from daughter Trenity en route to a running clock second half for the win.

“All we do is run and gun,” said Gilford. “Hannah Foster is a good athlete that gets a lot of rebounds for us. Alyssa Sherman is our top scorer.”

Both Sherman and Gilford are shooting about 20 points per game; mainly layups, with the Panthers defense getting 4-6 steals per game.
