Eleanor Julia (Nuter) Cibula
Eleanor Julia (Nuter) Cibula, 92 years of age, died on June 27, 2017 at South Miami Hospital while surrounded by her loving children and priest. She was born February 24, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois.
Her husband, Capt. Charles Cibula, was transferred to Jacksonville Naval Airbase in 1951. Charles and Eleanor immediately made Orange Park their forever home when they purchased property on River Road overlooking the St. Johns River. After their children were grown, they moved to the Loch Rane and Orange Park Country Club community.
She was a loving wife of 63 years to Charles Cibula, Jr. She is predeceased by husband Charles, her parents, John and Julia (Kosik) Nuter and her brothers, Jimmy and John Nuter.
She is survived by four children: Kenneth (Doris Hobbs) of Chadds Ford, Pa., Karen (James Hatfield) of Tallahassee, Fl., Kathy (Bart Wallis) of Miami, and David of Orange Park; two grandchildren: Jay Hatfield (Shana Gamble) of Live Oak, Fl., and Michele Hatfield (Marcus Pellino) of Tallahassee. She was blessed with four great grandchildren: Bryce and Chase Hatfield, Raymond and Mia Bella Pellino. Her brothers Danny and George Nuter continue to live in Chicago and Michigan.
Charles and Eleanor were very active in supporting the small missionary Catholic Church (St. Marys) and the parish priests. The church was located on the corner of Blake Street and River Road. On Saturdays, Eleanor ironed the altar linens and priest’s vestments, and then prepared a floral arrangement for the alter. Charles would be mowing and manicuring the six-acre plus church property. The parish priest was usually found at Eleanor’s dinner table on Sunday. They enjoyed her European cooking and famous apple strudel!
Eleanor and Charles spearheaded numerous fundraising activities. They organized events, built booths, created crafts to sell, and cooked for the numerous fund raising bazaars. Through their hard work and the perseverance of the small group of parishioners, they secured a permanent church - St Catherine’s of Sienna located on Kingsley Ave.
Until her late 80’s, her individually designed flower arrangements would quietly be placed in St Catherine’s Church at the base of the Virgin Mary statue. When no longer physically able to continue this custom, she contracted with her favorite local florist to create a flower arrangement as a tribute to the Virgin Mary.
While raising four children, she enjoyed community activities of a small town. Eleanor was a Past President of the Orange Park Garden Club, Chairman of the State Flower Show, a Bridge Club enthusiast, a lifelong member of Moose Haven and one of the initial members of Orange Park Club Continental.
Along with Eleanor’s creative and artistic abilities, she was also enthusiastic, focused and persistent. She loved nature, especially flowers and clouds. In her 40’s she learned oil painting techniques for landscape and still life. Her paintings won awards and were displayed in several commercial arenas. She had an expertise in flower arranging and consistently won top awards at the local and State levels. After her children were grown, Eleanor decided to go back to school to become a licensed Practical Nurse and eventually a Registered Nurse. She worked at University Hospital until she retired as an emergency triage nurse and a medical surgical floor nurse.
When her mother, Julia Nuter, was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Eleanor provided loving care in her home between hospital stays. She realized the importance of quality medical care, compassion and emotional support for both the patient and family.
After experiencing the frustrations of no end-of-life support for terminal patients and their families, she volunteered as a visiting nurse for Jacksonville Hospice, which was in its infancy stage at that time. She subsequently organized a group of Hospice nurses for the Orange Park area. Eleanor could not have imagined that the Jacksonville and Orange Park Hospice programs would continue to provide palliative care and support to thousands of families during the last forty years.
After retirement, she and her husband traveled throughout the United States and Europe. They reconnected with family and friends in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. She most enjoyed visiting relatives in Chicago, Michigan, Bonita Beach and Naples.
The last several years of her life were quiet. She lived full time with her son David in Orange Park and she visited her daughter, Kathy in Miami during the winter and spring. While in Miami, she loved dining out, getting her nails and hair done and watching the wild peacocks in the yard. In Orange Park, Holiday dinners afforded her the opportunity to enjoy her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will always remain in our hearts.
The Wake will be on Monday, July 10th from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, Fl. 32073. The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 11th at 11:00 am at St Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church, 1649 Kingsley Ave., Orange Park, Fl. 32073. Interment to follow the service at Magnolia Cemetery 1040 Kingsley Ave., Orange Park. Park Avenue Florist is coordinating the floral arrangements. Contact information: 1 (800) 275-1189
