John Bennett Walters III

Lieutenant Commander John Bennett Walters III, U.S. Navy (Retired), former resident of Montevallo, AL. died on Wednesday Feb.6, 2019 at the age of 78, at his home in Blairsville, Ga. He was a native of Knoxville, Tenn.and was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John Bennett Walters Jr., and Martha Patterson Walters as well as his brother, Robert David Walters.
A 1962 graduate of the University of Montevallo, he joined the Navy, completed Naval Pre-Flight School, and was commissioned an Ensign. A twenty year U.S. Navy Veteran and P2/P3 Naval Flight Officer, he completed six tours of duty, including three combat tours, Flight School instructor, hurricane/typhoon hunter tours, X.O. of Nantucket Naval Facility and a final tour as the Chief of Naval Operations’ “Last Navigator” with VP-30 NAS Jacksonville, Fla. LCDR.
Walters was awarded three Air Medals and the Combat Action Ribbon, as well as service awards. Following his naval service, LCDR Walters taught high school mathematics for 17 years in Orange Park.
Walters is survived by his wife, the former Caroline Gibbes Scott Walters of Blairsville and their three daughters: Caroline Walters Sims (Steve) of Dumfries, Va., Jane Walters Phillips (John) of Walterboro, S.C., and Laura Walters Firoozi (Kam) of Winter Springs, Fla., as well as seven grandchildren.
Walters was a longtime member of The Montevallo United Methodist Church and most recently a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church in Blairsville, Ga.
Graveside services were held on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019 at the Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Winfred Pitts officiating. Special music was presented by John Sims. The North Ga. Honor Guard conducted Military Honors.

Capt. William Carrier Jr.
Capt. William Carrier Jr. USN (Ret.)

passed away January. 8th, 2019. Bill was born in Indianapolis, Ind. and graduated from the Naval Academy, class of 1945, earning a degree in Marine Engineering.
After graduation Bill served on the U.S.S. Nashville in WWII and went on to become a naval aviator.
Some notable highlights of his 30 year Navy career are: Armament Test Pilot from 1957-59; Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron 85 CV59; CO of the U.S.S. Virgo in the Vietnam War (1969); CO of Patuxent River, Md. Naval Air Station 1970-72 and the selection as a candidate for the Project Mercury Astronaut program.
During his distinguished career Bill proudly served in WWII and both the Korean and Vietnam wars receiving many awards including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and National Defense Service metal.
He crossed paths with the likes of John Glenn, Alan Shepard, Wally Schirra, Jimmie Doolittle, General MacArthur and Sen. John McCain. Bill retired from the United States Navy as a Captain on July 1, 1974 and along with his family settled in Jacksonville, Fla.
He continued a life of service participating in the Masons, Shriners, Salvation Army, and Boy Scouts. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, golf, motorcycling, travel, and being a member of the Big Orange Chorus.
He had a strong impeccable integrity and irreproachable character forged by his education and career. Bill spent his entire life serving others, from his beloved country, community and friends to most importantly serving his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend and enjoyed a full and rewarding life.
Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife Grace of 56 years, son Lt. Jg. Bruce Carrier and sister Rose Mary Westra.
He is survived by two children, Carolyn Osterman and William ‘Bill’ Carrier III; son-in-law Chuck Osterman; grandchildren Chris Osterman, Troy Osterman and Gabrielle Carrier; great-grandchildren Evan and Noah Osterman; nephews Mark and Steve Westra.
A graveside service to honor the life of Captain William Carrier Jr., will be held in Arlington National Cemetery of Arlington, Virginia, at a future date.

Mark A. ‘Tony’ Knott
Mark A. “Tony” Knott passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2019 in Orange Park, Fla. with love and family surrounding him.
He was the husband of 53 years to his wife Betty Jo, and the father of two daughters Tracy Wells and Rhonda Knott.
Tony was born in Jacksonville, Fla. on November 30, 1944. He was preceded in passing by two siblings, Theresa Baden and James Knott, and is survived by his sister Georgia Dowda of Orange Park, Fla.
He wed the love of his life, Betty Jo, on July 10, 1965. He was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School and also Western Carolina University with a B.S. and Master’s Degrees in Psychology. Tony retired as a State Farm agent in 2010, and then continued his established career as a General Contractor in Florida and North Carolina until his passing. Tony and Jo have been members of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville for 40 years and established a “Special Needs Ministry” there in honor of their disabled daughter Rhonda.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday February 16, 2019 at Hibernia Baptist Church, 7100 US 17 South, Fleming Island, Fla. 32003.
Reception to follow. Tony has requested “No ties for men.” Tony was a board member of the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast for 30 years.
