Oakleaf student arrested in mass shooting threat

OAKLEAF - After an investigation into online threats aimed at Oakleaf High School, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office identified a suspect and made an arrest.

Deputies arrested Alexandria Ashanti Summerset, an OHS student in 9th grade, on Feb. 23 shortly after midnight. She is charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor following her alleged threats to the school, according to the police report. She faces charges of making the false report of the use of firearms in a violent manner, disrupting or interfering with school administration or functions and making written threats to kill or do bodily injury to others.

The threats began on Feb. 21 with a social media post alleging an imminent attack from a student at the school, one week after 17 where gunned down at Broward County’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

“My cousin has a bad disorder and he’s planning on shooting Oakleaf High School because he saw the other shootings and plus the students there don’t talk to him,” said one of the posts. “Student and Teachers please Stay home and Stay Safe Thursday February 22 [sic].”

Forty percent of the students at Oakleaf did not attend school on Feb. 22. A second post was made the same day, alleging that the same cousin was just “waiting for everyone to be back.” The police report also mentions a text message sent to multiple people on Feb. 22, but the contents of this message have been redacted.

CCSO deputies met with Summerset and her family, where they acquired evidence implicating her in the threats. The deputies arrested Summerset and transported her to theDuval Detention Center.

In a press release, Superintendent Addison Davis commented on the arrests.

"I applaud the Clay County Sheriff's Office and staff for their quick and detailed work in this investigation. The sheriff's office worked around the clock to identify the person behind these threats and took action immediately,” Davis said. “I am extremely grateful for our continued partnership in keeping our schools and community safe and secure. As mentioned yesterday, this type of behavior will be addressed with zero tolerance and the student will be disciplined accordingly. Safety will remain our greatest priority and we will continue to foster a safe and respectful environment for our students and staff.”
