TALLAHASSEE – Fleming Island High senior Andrew Miller had his best state meet with an eighth place finish in Class 4A at the state cross country championships held Sat., Nov. 11 in Tallahassee.

Miller, with teammate Evan Fuller, also a senior, the lone area entrants in the Class 4A race, ran a time of 15 minutes, 57.16 seconds with Fuller at 49th in 16:53.90 on the rugged, hilly course.

“That 15:57 was the second fastest time of his career, on a hilly course, and it was the last race of the day, so it was much warmer out than the earlier races,” said Fleming Island cross country coach Jason Poole. “Andrew was probably at about 15th place with half a mile to go. He had a great finish with lots of other guys in front of him falling off the pace because of the final hill.”

Poole commented that Fuller’s final finish was minus his usual strong finish.

“As I told him though, being disappointed with a 16:53 just shows how good of a runner he really is,” said Poole. “I think Evan may have started out just a bit too fast. He traditionally has better races when he works his way up the pack.”

The top time in the Class 4A race was 15:39.70 by Sarasota junoir Benjamin Hartvigsen. The top 10 runners all finished under 16 minutes with just 19 seconds separating first from 10th place in the mad rush to the finish line.

Team champion Oviedo, with region 1-4A champion Kayamo Galloway finishing in 11th behind Miller, scored 99 points with their top five runners finishing in the top 30 runners.

In the Class 1A boys race, St. Johns Country Day School junior Benjamin Kailes topped his personal best time from regions with his 16:36.59 for 11th with teammate Matthew Stratton, just an eighth grader, also running his best race with a 28th place finish in 17:10.31.

St. Johns boys team finished 17th with 354 points behind team champion Mount Dora Christian’s 105 points. Providence finished second with 170 points.

In the girls 1A race, St. Johns finished 19th in coach Jay Birmingham’s 12th state meet visit. Circle Christian of Winter Park was team champion with 72 points edging runnerup Citrus Park Christian’s 74 points.

St. Johns top finisher was seventh grader Juliet Moody at 22:00.21 for 91st place overall; 72 in team points. Hannah Marshall, a freshman, finished 107th in 22:34.94 with Annalee Clay 108th in 22:37.19.
