ST. AUGUSTINE – St. Johns Country Day School’s double dose of Max accounted for three touchdowns in the air via pass from quarterback Max Monroe and a four passes night with one score for Mighty Max Arnold as the Spartans pulled off a dominating 47-6 win Thursday night over Florida School of Deaf and Blind.

St. Johns improved to 2-2 while Florida Deaf remained winless at 0-4.

Monroe, one of the biggest players on the Spartan roster was near perfect; 10 of 12 passes, with wideout Brady Walden his favorite target for the night with three catches for 76 yards and a first half score and also an option run touchdown.

From the opening kickoff, Monroe moved sideline to sideline with Walden, Arnold and Mathew Kelley taking quick tosses and making yards off blocks from Tanner Walker and Marcus Coleman on the edges.

Monroe just missed a wide open Arnold on second and 15 from near midfield before finding Walden on the same pass two snaps later on fourth down and 11 for a first down. Walden hauled in the post pattern pass near the 20 and strode in untouched for the first score of the night at 9:08. Monroe kicked the PAT to put St. Johns up 7-0.

Chipoletti called for an onside kick, but got flagged for offsides on the first try, but Walker scooped up the second kick to put the Spartan offense back on the field at the 44 yard line.

A jet sweep to Arnold put St. Johns at the Deaf 24 for a 32 yard pickup that led to Monroe faking the jet sweep to Walden and setting up a second and two that Walden grabbed a quick out to get a third and one for the Spartans.

Walker, behind Coleman, got the first down pass to the Deaf four yard line where Monroe finished off the drive with a run up the middle and a 14-0 St. Johns lead with 7:05 still in the first quarter.

On the kickoff, Monroe set up with Kelley and Walden set up as possible kickers as Chipoletti went for a third onsides kick.

Florida Deaf took over on offense after a lengthy referee discussion and moved behind an off-tackle offense. Tackles by Walden and a quarterback rush from Wyatt Smith set up a fourth and seven at midfield for Florida Deaf. A sack from Walden gave St. Johns possession at midfield.

Walden took the first handoff off left tackle behind tackle Ashton Corriea and put St. Johns at the Florida Deaf 30 for a 20 yard gain.

On first down, Coleman found a gaping hole in the middle of the Florida Deaf with Grayson Hall and Mosborg clearing a path for a 12 yard gain to the Deaf eight yard line. Monroe optioned left to Walden for a score to put St. Johns up 21-0 as the second quarter started.

As the second quarter started, Walden stepped in front of a Florida Deaf receiver for what would have been a sure pick six play, but the ball fell to the turf.

With 9:07 still in the half, St. Johns took over at their own 20 and opened with a jet sweep to Arnold behind Smith that got another first down with Walden getting to the Deaf 38 yard line on his own jet sweep for 30 yards, but a flag put the ball back at the Deaf 38.

On first down and 10, St. Johns opened with an option lateral to Walden that put the Spartans at the Deaf 25. On third and three at the 17, 6:22 left in the half, Monroe zigged and zagged his way to a score and a 28-0 lead.

Florida Deaf would score their first touchdown of the season for a 28-6 halftime lead for St. Johns.

In the second half, Kelley scored off a 58 yard pass and also got an interception with a 53 yard return for a score.
