OAKLEAF - Orange Park Junior High eighth grader Mei Chiang won impressively in the 800 and 1600 meter runs, but it was sprinting prowess by Oakleaf Junior High that won the girls title, including a nationally-ranked 4 x 100 relay split.

Lake Asbury ousted the boys title from Orange Park Junior High’s boys despite impressive wins from Antonio Johnson at the Northeast Florida Athletic Conference track and field championships Thursday night at Oakleaf High School.

In the girls 4 x 100 relay, the Oakleaf Junior High foursome of Tamira Briley, Ariana Eason, Kyah Shannon and Vivica Fitzgerald blasted the field in 50.62 seconds to post the fastest time in Florida in 2018 and a top three time nationally by two separate track results websites; one Athletic.net that has a Texas school clocking a 50.14 time in February.

Chiang, the top-ranked miler and 3000 meter runner in Florida, dominated the 800 and 1600 with start to finish wins of 2:31.65 and 5:24.04 on the blustery day while Johnson went from a win in the high jump pit at 5’-4” to a 2:16.37 win in the 800 to a 5:15.93 win in the 1600 as the Wildcat boys scored 94 points to Lake Asbury’s 122.

For the girls, Oakleaf got wins in the 100 from Ariana Eason in 13.09 over Green Cove Springs Junior High’s Fiona Whitfield in 13.12 as the Lady Cougars took second in team points with Whitfield also taking second in the 200 meter dash to Oakleaf’s Kyah Shannon, 26.86-27.20.

In the 400, Oakleaf continued its dominance in the sprints with Naiomi Hereim overtaking Nia Brown of Lakeside to win in 1:04.90 with Brown a second behind at 1:05.94.

In the 800, behind Chiang, Oakleaf got three finishers in the 2-3-4 slots with Sierra Barrera, Madison Wade and Amari Smith giving chase for the two laps.

In the girls 1600, Green Cove Springs’ Lauren Schaudel, in her first meet of the season after injuries, gamely led Chiang for two laps before giving up the lead with Cougar teammate Grace Adams finishing second.

Oakleaf’s girls won relay gold in the 4 x 100, 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 to dominate team points.

In field events, Oakleaf’s Adriauna Daniels got wins in the shot put and discus with other winners Orange Park’s Zoe Whaley in high jump at five feet and Green Cove’s Whitfield in long jump at 15’-7”.

For the boys, Green Cove’s Kade Frew beat out Orange Park’s Darion Domineck and Oakleaf’s Ian Butts with Frew and Domineck both clocked in at 12.48 and Butts in at 12.49. Lake Asbury’s Same Singleton was fourth in 12.50 to close out one of the closest finishes of the night.

In the 200, Domenick would burn the field with a 24.83 to Lake Asbury’s Harrison Robinson’s runnerup 25.32 with Frew third and Butts sixth.

In the 400, Lake Asbury got 18 team points from a 1-2 finish from Savion Lewis and Jared Burt in 57.06 and 57.78.

In the hurdles, Lake Asbury’s Robinson won over William Restall of Orange Park with a 14.85 split. Robinson also won the long jump with an impressive 20’-1” leap over two Oakleaf jumpers; Donovan Shannon and Butts.

Orange Park’s boys won the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays with Green Cove taking the 4 x 800 relay title.

Lake Asbury got a second 1-2 finish with Derrick Mosley and Alquenious Ray topping the shot put field with Mosley winning at 41’-10”. Wilkinson’s Rashawn Floyd won the discus at 115’-5” with teammate Wyatt Underwood second at 107’-5”.
