Jaguars tango in Foxboro
FOXBORO, MA - The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the lair of the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots for a week of championship level practices and a preseason game (August 10) that will pit former coaching rivals Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick.
The Jaguars return to Jacksonville to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a week of practice and an August 17 preseason game.
Coughlin, the Jaguars newest addition as the executive vice president of football operations, was the head coach of the New York Giants when Belichik was coach at New England. The Giants beat the Patriots twice in Super Bowl action, Super Bowl XLII 17-14 in 2008 and Super Bowl XLVI 21-17 in 2012.
Coughlin was the first Jaguars coach, 1995-2002, before leaving for the Giants, 2004-2016. Doug Marrone is the head coach of Jaguars.
“It’s going to make our team better,” Marrone said, after the Jaguars first practice in Foxboro. “That was really the goal coming up here.”
In a near disastrous first week of pads practice, third year quarterback Blake Bortles was hit with five interceptions on one session and three in another with the Jaguars looking to reverse their offensive misfortunes.
On the other hand, the same statistics indicate a ferocious and ambitious defensive squad led by a strong linebacker crew of Paul Posluszny, Myles Jack and Telvin Smith, plus defensive back A.J. Bouye, who will be eyeballing a now 40 year old Tom Brady, the New England quarterback.
“Going against the best quarterback in the NFL … we know how efficient their offense is,” Bouye said. “They’re smart with the ball. They don’t cause many turnovers, so even to play tight coverage every down gives us a positive going into the next day.”
Against the Bucs, the Jaguars will face a second quality offense led by former Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston who has a bevy of pass-catching weapons in Michael Evans (96 catches),Adam Humphries (55 catches) and Alabama rookie tight end O.J. Howard.
In practice on Sat., July 29, despite a steady downpour, Winston was able to connect downfield with efficiency.
