JACKSONVILLE – St. Johns Country Day School track has been a mainstay at the Class 1A track meet with coach Jay Birmingham skilled at getting his troops peaked and ready to go in the spring, but it was a foot injury and a handful of fifth and sixth place finishers that kept the numbers going to the Class 1A track and field championships in Bradenton May 6-7 very low.
Sprinter Kendall Sage, a top athlete in the 100 meter dash, where she clocked in with the second fastest time of all four districts, was hampered by a foot injury that turned her fast feet to painful steps. Sage competed, but nowhere near her peak form.
Sage’s twin sister, Courtney was able to punch her ticket to Bradenton in two events with top four finishes in both hurdle events; a third in the 100 hurdles and a third in the 300 meter hurdles.
Boys sprinter Jett Isley hovered in on the homestretch of the rugged 400 meters and inched ahead for a fourth place finish in 52.57 seconds. All four regions clocked in with 50-plus second winning times to give Isley’s effort a good chance for a state medal.
In the distance events, Spartans’ seventh grader Mackenzie Glenn will get a second chance at the state meet in the 3200. Glenn was running in a pack of five runners into the final 800 of her event and was able to hold on to fourth place with a time of 12:11.56. Glenn’s effort got her to the state meet, but the three other 1A region top times were all under 11 minutes.
St. Johns finished fifth in three events; the girls 4 x 800, the boys 4 x 400 and the girls 800 meters where sixth grader Juliet Moody made a courageous move on the first lap to the front, but was passed in the final 60 meters.
