Puerto Rico native provides aid in wake of Hurricane Maria
FLEMING ISLAND – A Fleming Island entrepreneur is helping provide much-needed aid to residents of Puerto Rico who were ravaged by Hurricane Maria. Ryan Costello created the GoFundMe page “25 Generators” almost immediately after seeing the devastation that occurred on Sept. 20. Last week, Costello’s his first shipment of generators left a Westside Jacksonville trucking facility heading to his homeland. He also announced his fundraising efforts have surpassed $10,000. He estimated that the purchase, packaging and shipping of each generator unit costs $300-400 and his goal is to raise enough money to send 25 units to the American Commonwealth. Costello owns and operates four retail bookstores and a book distribution facility that supplies many major retailers. He employs around 40 Puerto Ricans in his enterprise and is a hands-on owner-operator. On average, he spends two weeks per month away from his family to do everything from run a cash register, interview job applicants, repair and maintenance work and even book deliveries.
