GREEN COVE SPRINGS – As one of the more versatile athletes to walk through the Clay High School hallways, senior soccer ace Liz Fogarty will be focusing on just soccer as she heads to Mississippi State University in January. Fogarty signed a letter of intent last week in the Clay High media center midst teammates, family and friends.
Fogarty is not quite ready to go yet. Her second job, or maybe her third job, is the place kicker for the Clay High football team. Clay is set to battle in the next few weeks to continue on into the state playoffs once again.
Fogarty, just last week, completed a seven for seven night last Friday in the Blue Devils 49-3 district 5-5A win over Ridgeview High School and was a part of a recovered kickoff fumble by gunner Tyler Lewis that led to a second half touchdown for Clay.
In 2016, it was Fogarty hitting a critical late field goal to tie Palatka and keep the Blue Devils hopes alive in district play en route to a region playoff spot. Clay eventually lost in the state semifinal to Ponte Vedra; the state runnerup.
Fogarty’s second job, ironically, was being the star quarterback for the Clay High flag football team that won a district title and advanced into the state playoffs last year only to be stopped in the region finals against Choctawhatchee of Fort Walton Beach. Clay defeated Terry Parker in the region opener to advance.
Her first job, accordingly, now that she has signed to play soccer as a midfielder at Mississippi State, would be soccer where the Blue Devils, under coach Stephanie Waugh, have the unlucky task of having to upend state power Ponte Vedra High each year, a major club soccer affiliate with a handful of state playoff berths. Clay finished second to Ponte Vedra in the district 4-4A championship tournament in 2016 with Ponte Vedra eventually losing in the state championship game.
Mississippi State is currently 7-4-3 overall under coach Tom Anagnost with a 1-4-2 record in Southeastern Conference play.
