FitLife: Give back at the Black Creek 5K

MIDDLEBURG – Our area will be forever changed by the devastating water and floods brought by Hurricane Irma.

The residents of Black Creek and the surrounding area were hit hard and will never be the same. The aftermath, however, offers the community a chance for solidarity, hope and giving back.

On Saturday, October 21st, we have an opportunity to join the 6th Annual Black Creek 5k. Run or walk, beginner or veteran, individually or as a team, it is a race event for the whole family, for our whole community. And this year the race will have a special meaning: a rallying point for those affected for Hurricane Irma.

Neighbors Helping Students

Known as the “friendliest race in Clay County,” the course is a beautiful 3.1-mile route through historic Middleburg, past the mansions on Main Street Park, to the banks of Black Creek, up and down Hill Street, and to the finish line. There is a free one-mile fun run for the kids, food and sponsor booths, barbecue sandwiches and music and motivation from Middleburg High School’s band and cheerleaders.

The nonprofit race attracts many local business partners and sponsors to help support their mission. This year’s race will continue to benefit student scholarships at Middleburg High School and the David White Memorial Scholarship. According to the race director and one of the founders Michael Patch, the race has raised more than $55,000 over the past six years for graduating seniors at the school.

“This is a great American community with wonderful, caring, hard-working residents. I hope that the 2017 BC5K will offer Middleburg a welcomed distraction from some of the recent challenges. This run is a cause worth supporting and many of our young residents will directly benefit. Middleburg High is honored to partner with this organization,” said Roger Dailey, principal at Middleburg High School.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Besides running or walking the course, this year our community can donate directly to the cause with food and clothing. Items such as shoes or canned goods are being collected for the Agape House at First Baptist Church of Middleburg in an effort to refill their shelves for upcoming needs and the holiday season.

“Plans are underway to have the event be a donation drop-off site for supplies for those impacted by the storm. Unfortunately, local families whose homes were ravaged by the winds and rising waters (many located along our 5K event route in historic Middleburg) will still be in need at the end of next month when the 5K takes place,” said Mary Justino, race public relations director.

Finish with Community Pride and Style

All race participants will receive a finisher’s t-shirt, a cinch bag, post-race photos, water, fruit and some barbecue. Awards are given to the top three male and female in various age groups. The top fastest finishers get Cypress knees! New this year is an award for the oldest finisher. And like in the past, if you’re fast enough and “beat the race director” Michael Patch (who can run in near the twenties), then you get a cool hat.
