ORANGE PARK – St. Johns Country Day School’s batting lineup got shut down for most of their region semifinal match Wednesday with North Florida Christian in a showdown of north Florida powerhouses and the outlook looked bleak as the Lady Spartans were finding it hard to get baserunners on base.

With both pitchers keeping strong control from the mound, St. Johns’ Brianna Enter with seven of her 10 strikeouts in just the first three innings and NFC’s Katelyn Wood snagging four of her seven whiffs in the same time.

In the fourth, NFC struck first for two runs with an opening single and two errors to push two runs across for the Eagles.

Down 2-0, St. Johns needed a spark to pull out the win and it was Enter in the fifth who struck with a three run homer after a single from Jordan Sabo and Maddie Wilkes on base after being hit with a pitch.

The score rocketed to 3-2 and St. Johns looked to add to that with a single to Linsey Arnett, but a single to Natalia Burnsed pushed Arnett to second, but she got caught stretching the play to third to end the inning.

St. Johns (16-3) travels Tues., May 8 to the region final against Rocky Bayou Christian (19-1) whose lone loss of the season, ironically, was an 8-7 match against North Florida Christian March 5. North Florida returned the favor with a 6-1 win over Rocky Bayou in the district 1-3A championship game.

In the opposite region final, Cornerstone Charter Academy (18-10) will host Carrollwood Day School (17-8) for a chance at the 3A semifinal on May 16.
