ST. JOHNS – Down by as much as 26-10 into the fourth quarter, the Fleming Island High football team battled back to lead 27-26 off a Noah Hamlet field with less than two minutes, but fell to a 10 yard touchdown pass to lose 32-27 in a crucial district 3-7A contest that throws a monkey wrench into the upcoming playoff contenders race.
Fleming Island allowed three passes; of 30, 10 and 10 to Creekside that moved the Knights offense quickly downfield in the final two minutes for the winning score.
Fleming Island also turned the ball over seven times; six in the first half, to stomp their own foot; three fumbles, three interceptions and an onsides kick as Creekside was utilizing all forms of ball tactics to thwart the Golden Eagle attack.
Highlights in the scoring for Fleming Island was senior Ryan Smenda who converted a fake punt into a 70 yard touchdown run. Smenda did have a 60 yard interception returned for a touchdown that was negated by a penalty flag.
Creekside quarterback Jake Forcier dominated the Fleming Island defense with 368 yards passing and three touchdown strikes.
